Jay Bilas Defines Toughness

There are many definitions for what it means to have “toughness” in the game of basketball. For some, toughness means pumping your chest, taunting an opponent after a big dunk, or getting in someone’s face and squaring up as if to fight. This is NOT what it means to have toughness in basketball. In fact, this is FAKE toughness.

Unfortunately, the media has created a false perception of what toughness looks like.

Jay Bilas says that “Toughness has nothing to do with size, physical strength or athleticism. Some players may be born tough, but I believe that toughness is a skill, and it is a skill that can be developed and improved. Michigan State coach Tom Izzo always says, “Players play, but tough players win.” He is right.”

In Bilas’s article, titled “Toughness,” he goes into extensive detail about the different ways players can exhibit true TOUGHNESS on the court. CLICK HERE to read the full article.
